Music and Memory

Music and Memory

Dementia can feel like a roller coaster ride. There are high peaks and low points, nervous feelings about what could be ahead and even sometimes having the urge to scream. Over five million Americans suffer from dementia daily. Some common symptoms of dementia can include memory loss, confusion, short attention span, lack of motivation, and depression.

Westhills Health Care has recently undergone certification to begin our Music and Memory Program. Music and Memory is a non-profit organization that uses music therapy to stimulate the minds of those trapped in the confines of dementia. The organization’s mission is to provide access to music and to educate communities about music therapy and the benefits it can have. The hope is to give personalized therapeutic music to improve standard of living and care within the health care industry.

iPods are being prepared for residents to listen to music that they love. Westhills is eager to see the results from integrating this program within our Health Care Community. There have been some amazing benefits with participants of this program. We are hoping to unlock closed minds by introducing music to our residents.

Biscuit Spirals - Cooking with Susan

Biscuit Spirals - Cooking with Susan

These Biscuit Spirals are a great sweet treat for a fun breakfast, or a snack with your afternoon coffee! Many of you know Susan as a friendly face in our Westhills Health Care, but she is also quite the entertainer! Her latest recipe is one that her family loves. At Westhills we strive to make each day a blessing and to live life to the fullest, as you can see, we do just that within our cooking demos! Enjoy these tasty twists that will have your sweet tooth begging for a second serving!

Biscuit Spirals
2 C. All Purpose Flour
2 TBSP Granulated Sugar
1 tsp Salt
½ C. Butter (shortening)
1 Beaten Egg
½ C. Milk
1 TBSP Butter, Melted
3 TBSP Brown or Granulated Sugar (Or Cinnamon Sugar)

Glaze (Optional)
1 C. Sifted Powdered Sugar
4-5 tsp Milk

450 Degrees
10 Minutes

In a mixing bowl stir together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in ½ cup shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make well in center. Combine egg and milk, add all at once to dry mixture. Stir until dough clings together. Knead gently on lightly floured surface for 12-15 strokes. Roll dough into 15x8 inch rectangle.

Brush the melted butter over the surface of the dough. Then sprinkle your choice of brown sugar, granulated sugar, or cinnamon sugar over the butter. Fold the dough in half to make a 15x4 rectangle. Cut into 15-16, 1 inch strips. Hold the strip at both ends and twist in opposite directions twice, forming a spiral. Place on lightly greased baking sheet, pressing both ends down. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. If desired, combine powdered sugar to 4-5 teaspoons milk, until it reaches to a drizzling consistency. Drizzle over warm biscuits. Makes 15-16 spirals.

Wellness at Westhills

Wellness at Westhills

My name is Erin Smith and I currently hold the position of Wellness Director here at Westhills Village. I have been at Westhills Village for 3 years. Prior to joining the team at Westhills Village, I was the Aquatics Specialist for the City of Rapid City. I hold a degree in Recreation Management with extensive training in Exercise Science and Sports Management.

Did you know that everyone who has joined the deferred waiting list is invited to participate in our Connections Program? This includes FREE participation in all wellness programs, exercise classes and use of the swimming pool and fitness center. You are also invited to attend any of our scheduled activities. Just by being on the waiting list to come to Westhills Village in the future, you are invited and encouraged to begin participating in events and wellness.

Our Connections program offers you the opportunity to engage in our many programs and activities before you move in.  We invite you to meet with our wellness department to learn about how you can access the amenities offered at Westhills such as a state of the art fitness center, beautiful swimming pool, exercise classes, and game room.

We are all composed of mind, body and spirit.  At Westhills Village, we strive to offer many different activity and event choices. Every individual has the right to live life to its fullest potential.  Our goal is to create opportunities for all residents to enjoy life as independently as possible long into the future.  Personal wellness is a never-ending lifelong journey built upon life experiences, self-awareness, and education.

Wellness is much more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition. It is the full integration of states of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The model used by Westhills Village includes social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and physical wellness. Each of these seven dimensions act and interact in a way that contributes to our own quality of life.

What are you waiting for?

Wellness Director

When is the Right Time?

When is the Right Time?

Clients often ask me the question of when is the right time is to join our deferred waiting list. My advice is always that if Westhills Village is even a possibility at any point in the future, there is no such thing as joining too soon. For one deposit, you can join the waiting list for multiple sizes and types of units. If your name comes up and you aren't ready to make the move, you can decline without losing your place on the list. The deposit is also 100% refundable at any time if you change your mind.

We currently have a waiting list on most sizes of apartments and Villas, with the exception usually being one-bedroom units. In addition, future residents may have special preferences when it comes to location. Joining the waiting list early helps to give you the most opportunities to find the perfect Apartment or Villa.

I would also invite you to come and tour Westhills Village if it's been awhile since you've been here. With the completion of our building project, we have so many wonderful new additions like our swimming pool, fitness center, theater and game room. Retirement living has never been better at Westhills Village and we would be delighted to show you around. Also, as a member of our deferred waiting list, you are granted full access to our wellness facilities, programs and activities.
If you don't know where to begin to think about retirement, we invite you to come and begin the conversation with us.

We realize you have a choice in retirement living and we would love to be part of your planning process.

Thanks for reading!
